Chester’s most notable contemporary claim to fame is the famed cartoonist Elzie Segar, who created the Popeye comic strip. Mr. Segar based many of his characters and storylines on experiences with people in Chester. The Elzie C. Segar Memorial Park was created in honor of the artist, and a six-foot statue of the Sailor Man himself is the central attraction of this park. To further commemorate the Popeye legacy, Chester has erected several other character statues from the comic throughout the town, and the Character Trail is a still-growing attraction of the town.

However, Chester is so much more than The Home of Popeye. Several historical locations mark the area’s past, outdoor activities are available in nearby parks and wildlife refuges, and examples of noted architectural styles can be seen throughout Chester. There is so much to see and do in Chester! Why not discover our city for yourself?
