While Southern Illinois has many towns to discover and explore, there are three notable draws of our area: Southern Illinois University, the area wineries, and Shawnee State Forest.
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is the home of the Salukis. SIUC offers more than 170 possible degrees, with several nationally recognized programs and is known as an Elite University and a top research college in the country.
Southern Illinois is home to more than 25 beautiful and distinct wineries. Three main self-guided wine trails are known in the area: The Southern Illinois Wine Trail, the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, and the Wabash Valley Wine Trail. Illinois also hosts many wine festivals, and Southern Illinois towns are key destinations for these events.
The 270,000 acre Shawnee State Forest is a major national park destination in the southeast corner of Illinois. Offering picnic areas, camping, hiking, horseback riding, ATV trails, fishing, hunting, and boating, the Shawnee State Forest has something for every lover of the outdoors.
