There is a long legacy of rich family and social life in this beautiful 1886 Folk Victorian house. Guests of the 21st century enjoy conversation over breakfast and gather in the parlor to enjoy music. The wraparound porch provides a perfect place for tea overlooking the mature flower beds and landscaping.

The home was built as a wedding present by blacksmith James Philp for his son, James Harvey Philp and bride Emma, in 1886. Emma sold the house in 1916 to the William Dammyer family after James' death. William was a cheese maker and farmer. His was a bustling family of eight and William "modernized" the home with its first bathroom, electricity to replace gaslights, and hardwood floor.

In 1939, William Dammyer suffered a heart attack and died. William's wife Minnie and daughter Clara, along with Clara's husband Edward, continued living in the house. After 54 years in the house Clara sold it to the Buttner family who remained for the next three years.

In 1974, Don and Sherry Brewer and their three children moved into the house. They added a garage/coach house and a large addition to the back of the house, winning an award for this "Historically Sensitive Addition". The Brewers raised their children and, following the departure of their last grown child, decided to open their home as a Bed & Breakfast. Since that decision in 1995, thousands of guests have enjoyed lodging and breakfast and left their stories and compliments behind. Sherry continues to view guests as potential friends and shares the historic ambience of Victorian times while providing contemporary amenities and her spectacular full breakfasts.

This pristine historical vintage home with 6 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 4 car garage is full of character, tradition, and lots of ambience. Tastefully rehabbed and restored, the architectural details will amaze you. Five panel doors/shaped moldings/crown moldings/claw foot tubs/antique light fixtures/fireplace mantels/hardware and so much more abound in this 3500+ sf home. The 4 car heated garage with a second floor provides ample storage space and/or possible conversion for additional living space. Younger guests will enjoy their own space inside the child’s playhouse (former chicken coop). All of this sits amidst a mature landscaped lot backing up to Towne Park and a block from the Prairie Trail/Fox Valley bike trail.

It is one of the most stately homes in this historic and scenic community. The home was totally renovated and converted to a successful B&B in 2003 by the present owner. Each of the six guest rooms has a private bath with individually zoned hot water heat. In addition, each centrally air conditioned room is keyed for privacy with access to exterior doors for the convenience of the guests. Three antique fireplaces with scene depicted cast bronze covers as well as original pocket doors in the entry way, the parlor, and the tea room have been beautifully restored. The elegant, original lead glass windows in the parlor have been preserved and are mounted and hinged on the interior of the energy efficient replacement windows. A stately oak staircase leads inn guests to the six private bedrooms on the second floor, and then continues up to the two bedroom, third floor, inn keeper apartment. This third floor apartment has a charming wrap around windowed breakfast nook in the Queen Anne turret overlooking the rooftops of Macomb. At the time of the renovation in 2003, a first floor commercial kitchen was completed for the added purpose of scheduling "appointment only" dining for private weddings, parties, and celebrations in the parlor, breakfast room, and/or dining room. The "River Boat Captain" front porch and the second floor walk out balcony are ideal for reading or relaxing conversations. The Inselhaus has gained a reputation for its genuine hospitality, impeccable accommodations, delicious food, and festive celebrations. An on site cement parking lot accommodates twelve off street parking spaces. Additional parking on the adjacent streets is allowed.

Plano, Illinois

The Homestead Bed & BreakfastThe Homestead Bed & Breakfast

The Homestead project was conceived by
Alan & Robin Langguth, owners of the interiordecorating firm Langguth Design Ltd., as a unique way to showcase their business and at the same time preserve and renovate the most historically important building within the city limits of Plano.

To help cover some of the monthly overhead expenses the owners decided to pursue using the house in a multitude of facets including a bed & breakfast and a special event facility for intimate weddings, small group meetings, catered luncheons, and other compatible functions. Since opening the doors in May of 2004 The Homestead has seen over 5,000 visitors from 48 States and from 27 countries around the world. The diversity of the people visiting and staying at The Homestead has generated exposure that is truly remarkable!

With the main objective for The Homestead project being the use as a show house you will find that the attention to details is reflected everywhere you look. From hand-painted murals and other faux wall finishes, to the beautiful furnishings, exquisite lighting & plumbing fixtures, and culminating in a wonderful kitchen, the comments from visitors are always preceded by “wow”. Langguth Design has sold and continues to sell a varied assortment of decorating products out of The Homestead. These included tables and chairs, lamps and paintings, unusual accessories and even outdoor garden items. Sales such as these made it interesting for repeat visitors to see what had changed since the last time they visited The Homestead.

The secondary functions are the use as a bed & breakfast and special event facility and have garnered much praise and admiration. These functions were never intended to provide more than some secondary income but at the same time they were designed to help market The Homestead and it’s uniqueness to the public.

The Homestead Bed & Breakfast

Without much effort The Homestead has been featured in several magazine and newspapers as well as the lead photograph for the national marketing campaign of Unico Systems, Inc., the manufacturer of the mini-duct high-velocity HVAC unit installed during the renovation process throughout the house.

Typical bed & breakfast marketing programs (websites, internet directories, local radio ads, magazine & newspaper ads) had been fortified with public relation programs (newspaper articles, involvement with organizations and non-profits, and donations of time and overnight stays) all of which helped pull in reservations. Guests at The Homestead fell mostly into three groups: visitors to the Farnsworth House (designed by the acclaimed modern architect Mies van der Rohe and owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation); those coming to the area to visit family or friends; and people looking to get away for the weekend to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, or go to one of the many events in the local area.

Eleven intimate weddings and marriage renewals have taken place at The Homestead. Outdoor weddings take place on the labyrinth and can either be formatted in the typical center aisle layout or in a very unique wedding-in-the-round arrangement. A 20’ X 30’ white canopy placed next to the shelter at the rear of the house provides cover in case of inclement weather. Indoor ceremonies have taken place in the library. Marketing these offerings have been limited to the website and a few promotions as well as word-of-mouth referrals.

A major outdoor feature was added to The Homestead’s landscaping in 2004, this being the labyrinth and hedge maze. Marty Kermeen designed and built the labyrinth, and his colleague from England, the internationally recognized authority on both labyrinths and mazes, Jeff Saward, adapted the design of the maze from the 1846 Italianate-style maze at Somerleyton House in England in keeping with The Homestead’s historical character. Together the labyrinth and hedge maze make a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors and also attract tourists and labyrinth seekers from around the country.

The Homestead Bed & Breakfast

One area that was continuing to grow was the catered luncheon provided for bus tours in conjunction with tours of the Farnsworth House. Most of these tours were booked through the Chicago Architecture Foundation, which had from 14 to 21 of these per year; the groups have ranged in size from 12 to 53, with the average tour group being 31 people. The Homestead had also been booked for catered luncheons by private groups; i.e. the Women’s Auxiliary for the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2008 The Homestead was on track to have a total of 28 catered luncheons for these bus tours until the Fox River flooded in September canceling a number of tours that were on the books for late September, October and November.

Incidental sales of gift shop type items are customary to visitors and guests and while not totaling a large income it did provide another means of helping to brand The Homestead. The Homestead’s reputation is already well established as excellent both in manner of management of the facility and the breakfast served as well as the most unique and beautiful interior that leaves people spellbound. They all want to come back!

The Homestead was closed at the end of 2008 and awaits new owners who share an appreciation for history, architecture, beautiful landscaping, awesome interiors, and a passion for sharing this unique property with the public – whether they hail from Plano, Chicago, the United States or from anywhere in the world.
