Enjoy Lodging at a Bed & Breakfast in Carlyle, Illinois
Just 50 miles east of downtown St. Louis is your ideal lakeside escape. What began long ago as a few houses as a defense along the Goshen Trail, has evolved into an outdoor-lover’s ideal Midwest destination. Carlyle offers plenty of outdoor activities, access to over a dozen area wineries (including one here in town), friendly people, and welcoming accommodations that will prove to be a cut above the usual area hotels.
The town came from simple roots. We came to be as a ferry-crossing point across the Kaskaskia River for those following the Goshen Trail from Alton and Shawneetown. Soon after, a mercantile and Post Office followed, and our town was officially on the map! In the 1830s, our Water Flouring Mill was one of the best in the area, and our local Tavern and Hotel on Fairfax Street was known as the best place to stay between St. Louis and Indiana!
Today, Carlyle is mostly known as the home of the state’s largest man-made lake, Crystal Lake. At 15 miles long and 335 miles wide, it was built to control flooding problems in the area. Another feature of note is the General Dean Suspension Bridge crossing the Kaskaskia River, the only one of its kind in Illinois.
With these outdoor features come some great activities. The lake is known as one of the top-ten sailing lakes in the United States and has been host to many regattas and races. The lake is also a popular destination for fishing and swimming. Two parks and a recreation area frame the lake on the south, offering camping, hiking, and hunting.
We are also home to two challenging golf courses for your convenience and enjoyment. Carlyle Lake Golf Course features the fastest greens in the state on a par-3 course, letting you practice your finesse. Governer’s Run offers 18 holes of Championship golf, with an additional par-3 option, perfect for golfers of all skill levels.
Our historic downtown area offers gifts and antiques, several local restaurants, and a handful of national fast food chains. Like riding your bike? This is a great way to both get around town and to explore the area. Bring it along and enjoy the Carlyle Lake Bike Trail. These mapped routes will lead you through the city and along the southern tip of the lake, offering a good look at our town and some beautiful scenery along the water.
Carlyle is happy to be part of the Heartland Rivers Wine Trail, which covers much of the Illinois area east of St. Louis. Our own in-town winery offers dining and wine tasting and is one of a dozen wineries featured on the Trail.
