While Makanda hotels provide lodging, Makanda B&Bs provide scenery, atmosphere, and the welcome feel of a home away from home. Our inns are the perfect place from which to explore the uniqueness of Makanda and the beauty of the surroundings.
What began as a railroad town in 1845 has since become a popular home to artists from Southern Illinois University and the surrounding area. Makanda’s unique shops and the town boardwalk are perfect places to display, buy, and sell artwork and handmade goods.
Makanda is the gateway to the Giant City Park and welcomes visitors following both the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and the beautiful River to River hiking trail through the Shawnee National Forest.
Makanda also hosts two popular festivals. The Makanda Spring Fest welcomes the warm weather at the beginning of May. Local artists, live music, and family fun are featured at the Spring Fest. In the fall, Makanda is the site of the annual Vulture Fest in October. The Vulture Fest celebrates the migration of the vultures through the area.
